Our Model and Options
A Variety of Models and Options to Fit Your Needs
Franchise ownership models can vary depending on the brand, the business structure, and the owner’s goals. In general, business ownership often falls into four common models.
- Owner-operator
- Manage the manager
- Semi-absentee
- Absentee ownership
In franchising, you will often see the first three models. True absentee ownership is much less common, especially in businesses that depend on local leadership, customer relationships, and daily execution.
Owner-Operator Model
Instant Imprints offers prospective franchisees the opportunity to own and operate a visual communications business.
We recommend the owner-operator model for most new franchisees. In this structure, the owner takes an active role in the business and helps lead the center day to day.
This hands-on approach can be important in the early stages. It helps the owner understand customers, build local relationships, develop the team, and learn the business from the inside.
Manage the Manager Model
An Instant Imprints center can also operate with a key manager in place. This is sometimes called a manage-the-manager model.
This structure usually works best for franchisees who own multiple centers. With more than one location, the owner may have more scale to support strong management, shared resources, and a larger team.
High-performing teams need high-performing leaders. Because of that, this model requires the right people, systems, capital, and oversight.
For the right franchisee, multi-center ownership can create more personal flexibility and the opportunity to build a larger enterprise.
Semi-Absentee Ownership
Semi-absentee ownership is popular with many prospective candidates. The idea sounds appealing: keep a day job, invest in a business, and work part time while the business grows.
In reality, that model is difficult at the beginning. A new center needs leadership, attention, customer development, team building, and daily follow-through.
After the business reaches an acceptable performance level, the owner may have more flexibility. This often takes time, a strong team, and consistent execution.
For some owners, stepping back may become possible after the business matures. However, it is not the model we recommend for the startup phase.
Absentee Ownership
True absentee ownership does not fit our model in a meaningful way. A local business needs leadership, accountability, and active management.
Some experienced entrepreneurs with strong management systems and substantial capital may operate businesses from a distance. However, that is not the normal path for a new Instant Imprints franchisee.
If your preferred strategy is purely passive investment, starting a local small business may not be the best fit. In that case, investing in a parent company or another passive structure may be more efficient.
Area Franchisee Option
Entering the brand as an Area Franchisee can create a different type of opportunity.
This model may allow you to build a broader business with less direct involvement in the day-to-day operations of a single center.
Area franchise opportunities can involve more responsibility, more capital, and a larger development plan. They may also create a path for owners who want to build beyond one location.
Existing Center Resale Option
It may also be possible to enter franchising by purchasing an existing center.
From time to time, a franchisee may decide to sell a location they have opened and developed. This gives a new owner the opportunity to build on an existing business.
Resales can happen for many reasons. These may include retirement, illness, success, underperformance, or a decision to pursue other priorities.
If an existing center is available, we can help you understand the process and evaluate whether that option fits your goals.
Choosing the Right Ownership Path
The right path depends on your goals, capital, experience, lifestyle expectations, and desired level of involvement.
During the discovery process, we can help you understand the different franchise ownership models and how they apply to Instant Imprints.
Our goal is to help both sides determine whether the opportunity is the right fit.
